Students sit in the classroom for hours, then do homework. Many are already so stuck that they stay crouched for the rest of the day, in front of the telly or game console. Clever children have something much better in mind: They whirl around the ring as clowns and acrobats - at home with friends or in a real circus school, where they learn things that others don't even dream of.

Lord walked in

There are circus schools for children all over the country, the Circus Calibastra from Stuttgart is one of the most famous. Every year shortly before the summer holidays, the students present what they have practiced for up to 7, 000 spectators. Around 150 children are currently training once a week on a unicycle, on a harness, on a wire rope and much more. What started as a project in the school campus in 1985 has developed into a professional circus school that is open to all young people from the Stuttgart area. In July the time has come again: Then the artists show their tricks in a large tent. You can find the dates and the venue at www.calibastra.de, and here you can get a taste of the circus air:

Juggle

Circus students skillfully juggle balls, clubs, scarves and rings. What looks so graceful and light requires a lot of practice: In Circus Calibastra, the children learn to throw and catch in rhythm, without tensing up and without losing control over the trajectory. Little scared rabbits, who first cling to the ring or club, practice letting go. Reckless jugglers train concentration and measure. For a long time, it's time to throw, bend down and pick up, repeat, despair - and finally cheer! Then the coordination between eyes and hands is right, and this virtuosic harmony of grasping and letting go is even possible in a team.

acrobatics

Imagine someone getting on your shoulders. Now you have to be absolutely down to earth. In circus terminology, this means: creating a basis. By practicing regularly, the subordinates learn to ground themselves so that no one can knock them down so easily. The partners above are standing on their thighs or shoulders, but in the air. Those who prefer to have safe ground under their feet need some courage to climb up. The lower acrobats are responsible for the upper ones: they fall when the base shakes. Building a pyramid is therefore not just a sporting task, but also a social one that provides security and strengthens the sense of responsibility.

Balance

Unicycling, rope and stilts train the balance and help to overcome fear. The teacher holds young beginners' hands and walks by their side so that he immediately feels what is going on in a student. Sometimes one gets bang - especially on the tightrope, stiffens and has to jump off. An artist only keeps the balance for the moment, the next moment he has to create it again. Over time, trust and the necessary calm and concentration to balance safely and overcome any fluctuations grow. Circus children experience the pitfalls of thin ropes or wide-swinging trapezoids intensely: it is not enough to fantasize like on screen games; who is not adept, crashes.
