A lot has changed around the subject of heating in recent years: conventional gas and oil heating systems are being replaced by district heating or pellet heating systems, heat pumps etc. offer more environmentally friendly options for keeping them cozy and warm in winter and pleasantly cool in summer with the same device to have. For many people in times of A + refrigerators and LED lamps, infrared heaters, i.e. electricity-powered heaters, are a massive waste of lignite or nuclear energy that is already produced in an environmentally unfriendly manner. For others, the issue of environmental pollution is less important, but rather the supposedly much higher burden on their wallet. Because electricity is known to be expensive. But let's clarify a question first:

How does infrared heating work?

The infrared heater is powered by electricity. It converts electricity into heat using radiation. Therefore, infrared heaters are also called radiation or heat wave heaters. Infrared heaters do not use their rays to heat the air, but rather they heat the walls, the floor, the furniture, the objects in the room, the solids and liquids. And these then release the heat back into the room, where it is absorbed by the other objects in order to be released again and absorbed again. Through this cycle, it is not the air that transports the heat through the room, but all the bodies in the room - including people.

The long-wave, electromagnetic infrared radiation emitted by the heater is not harmful to humans, according to experts, and is even perceived by many as very pleasant and in a positive sense as “getting under the skin”. Especially from rheumatism patients. Infrared heating also does not whirl up dust mites - which is a big plus for asthmatics and dust allergy sufferers. In addition, in contrast to normal radiators, infrared heaters do not dry out the air, which not only benefits the mucous membranes of human and animal house residents who are already stressed in winter, but generally creates a comfortable, healthy living climate without overheating the room. But how does it work?

Technical structure of infrared heating

An infrared heater is about two centimeters deep and at its core consists of a heating conductor that converts the electricity into heat. This heating conductor is made of carbon fiber or carbon foil and is often reinforced with glass fiber. All of this is surrounded by a plastic mass. Since the infrared heating is supposed to give off the heat to the front, the part behind the heating conductor, technically from the heating conductor, is insulated with non-combustible insulation panels. To stabilize the system, powder-coated and galvanized sheet steel is attached. To the room there is a cover on the heating conductor, which can be made of aluminum, glass or natural stone. This part, i.e. the front cover of the infrared heater or the infrared heater, can be designed individually: stones, foils, ceramics, glass - the manufacturers of the infrared heaters have created a wide range of designs to integrate their products into any room as inconspicuously as possible. Or to put it in the spotlight that the resident would like it to be. The only restriction: The top material must be thermally conductive.

The infrared electric heater, which provides between 200 and 1500 watts of power per device, is connected with a normal power plug, which you plug into a normal socket. The temperature is controlled by a thermostat. There you can set how many degrees Celsius you would like to have in the room: the infrared heater sends rays until the desired temperature is reached. In addition, infrared heaters can be integrated into smart home systems via remote control.

The manufacturer should provide you with everything you need to attach the infrared heater to the wall or ceiling. Attaching the infrared heater is also easy for DIY enthusiasts if you follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Different types of infrared heating

  • Infrared surface heating: In this case, electrical heating mats are installed in the flush-mounting, which heat walls or floors directly, which in turn distribute the heat into the room via the objects in the room. If you are thinking about installing an infrared surface heater in your house, you should make a final decision before starting construction. Infrared heating mats are available by the meter and they consist of heating conductors that are fixed evenly in fabric panels. The advantage of carbon fiber braids is not only that once installed, they are completely invisible, but also that they dry any moisture in the walls or floor and are also very resistant. Laying the flooring or hammering in nails to hang pictures does not cause any damage to the infrared surface heating.
  • Infrared ceiling heating: Just hang the infrared heating on the ceiling. On the one hand, it is housed up there to save space and does not take up any wall space for shelves or the wardrobe. On the other hand, the infrared ceiling heating emits its heat downwards. That means: In combination with a dark floor, the infrared heater shines unhindered on the absorbent, dark surface and gives you a pleasantly warm room and floor in just a few minutes. For the infrared ceiling heating, you can choose between the inconspicuous variant in the form of a ceiling panel or a little more eye-catching as a design element. For example, as part of a wall tattoo designed by you - can also be used in children's rooms.
  • Infrared wall heating: The variant of the infrared wall heating has several subcategories, because attached to the wall, the infrared heating shows all its advantages. What do you think, for example, of having the infrared wall heating printed with your favorite painting or family photo and thus skillfully combining an art and a useful object in an image infrared heater? The simple installation on the wall, the flat heating panel and the highly efficient heating technology at body height are the strong points of the infrared wall heating.
  • Infrared heaters: To keep it pleasantly warm all year round on the terrace or balcony, you could use infrared heaters. The spotlights are available with a robust base or, also suitable for mobile indoor use, with castors. The so-called dark emitters are recommended for outdoor use. They are made of special tubes and emit only a very weak yellow-orange-red light.

Difference between infrared heating and night storage stoves

In addition to the infrared heaters, the night storage stoves are a well-known electrical heating system. As the name suggests, it can be used to store energy: the stoves store cheap electricity and therefore heat at night and emit it into the air during the day. They do not send infrared rays, but heat up the air like conventional heating. In addition, night storage heaters are much larger and less visually appealing than infrared heaters. They also do not use all the heat that they absorb at night to heat during the day - some of the heat is lost at night, which is then no longer available to you during the day. If you want to switch from a night storage heater system to an infrared heating system, you can keep the same connections and electricity tariffs.

Who is infrared heating suitable for?

In principle, infrared electric heaters are suitable for all house and apartment types. The only requirement is socket operation. This heating system is particularly suitable for very modern, extremely well insulated passive or low-energy houses. Ideally in combination with a photovoltaic system and a very good energy storage system. Because then you feed the infrared heating from the energy that your house has produced itself. Or, if you have to use externally produced electricity, then it is little and has less financial impact.

In contrast, relying solely on infrared heaters in a poorly insulated old building becomes very expensive. Some electricity providers have a special night-time electricity tariff for electrical heating. In order to benefit from the post-storage connection, you must be able to connect the infrared heater to a second circuit with its own counter.

However, the infrared heating can be used, regardless of electricity tariff, for heating in certain rooms - for example with infrared heating in the bathroom, for your favorite corner in the winter garden or the hobby room. Or as a heating system in a newly attached part, so that the main heating lines do not have to be installed in the extension. For example, if you are building a children's or guest room as a tiny house, you could install a well-functioning infrared heating system there with little money. Infrared heaters are also suitable for weekend houses in the green, for allotment huts as frost protection in winter and also for holiday apartments.

Infrared heating for different rooms

Since infrared heaters can get quite hot on their surface depending on the temperature, many parents choose the ceiling variant as a ceiling panel. The infrared heaters do not pose a fire hazard. They have built-in overheating protection and switch off automatically if they run too hot.

A mirror infrared heater is suitable as an electric heater in the bathroom. It combines heating and mirror surface in one and is therefore a blessing especially for small bathrooms. The mirror also never fogs up, since it is heated. Glass infrared heaters are an extension of the mirror infrared heater. They adapt to your wishes in design and color. The infrared panel heaters are extremely practical for turbulent family life. In the hallway or in the kitchen, use normal chalk to write messages on the infrared heater, the surface of which is covered with frosted glass. To clean, simply wipe the panel with a damp cloth, as with all infrared heaters.

Infrared heating in the bedroom

In the bedroom, the infrared heater saves space on the wall as a ceiling panel, which you can use for a closet or a shelf. Depending on the orientation of the infrared ceiling heating, the heat reaches your bed quite quickly and preheats it for you. Some people find it comfortable to sleep directly under a ceiling heater. Others are disturbed by the direct heat. You have to test what type you are - perhaps with friends.

What does infrared heating cost?

The costs for an infrared heater are made up of two components: the purchase price of the infrared radiators and their maintenance, i.e. the electricity costs. There are no maintenance costs. With correct insulation or thermal insulation of the house, well-calculated size and potency of the spotlights and well-considered placement as well as a night electricity tariff, a cheap electricity price or even your own photovoltaic system, infrared heating is a worthwhile and comparatively inexpensive investment in a warm future.

It takes between 40 and 100 watts of power to heat it per square meter of living space to be heated. In the worst case, this makes 2, 500 watts of heating power for a room with 25 square meters. Depending on the insulation, the number of windows in the room, but also on the number and size of the furniture. When buying infrared heating, you should therefore pay attention both to the proportion of radiation (legally, 50 percent, between 60 and 80 percent are common; more is physically not possible) and to the potency. If in doubt, you should get advice from a specialist on the number and wattage of the individual emitters. In general, many small infrared heaters are preferable to large infrared heaters. But if you buy too little and too weak spotlights, you sit in the cold. Too many or too strong infrared emitters, on the other hand, consume electricity unnecessarily.

You can get an infrared wall heater from 100 euros, but high-quality devices made in Germany cost more. A good rule of thumb is: An infrared heater with a heating output of 200 watts costs around 200 euros each. It consumes 0.2 kilowatt hours of electricity in one hour and will operate an average of eight hours over 180 days a year. With a night tariff of 0.22 cents per kilowatt hour, this makes electricity costs 65 euros a year.

But let's stay with your 25 square meter room, which you would like to heat with five 500 watt infrared heaters. You pay once, depending on the quality of the devices, the purchase price of 1, 500 to 2, 500 euros. The infrared heaters will operate in about 1, 440 hours a year. And since you only heat one room, a second electricity meter and the night storage tariff are not worthwhile for you, so you pay the normal, average kilowatt hour price of 29.99 cents. In a poorly insulated room, you pay your electricity provider 1, 200 euros a year. In a well-insulated room, he only gets half.
