Kitchen worktops made of sturdy granite are very popular because, in addition to the look, the most important thing in the kitchen is functionality. Generally there are many popular materials for countertops. Worktops made of plastic or wood are also popular, for example. Particularly high demands are placed on the material for the worktop, as it is subject to heavy daily stress, because here you can chop, quickly place a hot pot, spill, and much more. The requirements for the material are as varied as they are demanding: it should be robust, insensitive to scratches, water-resistant, heat-resistant, easy to care for, durable - and of course it should also have a beautiful design and match the overall picture of the kitchen. We tell you everything about the insensitive natural stone granite and its use in the kitchen.

Natural stone granite as material for the worktop

As the popular saying "bite on granite" suggests, granite is a very hard rock and therefore extremely resistant and resilient. This makes granite perfect for use in the kitchen. It is scratch and cut resistant and, thanks to its heat-resistant surface, immune to hot pots or pans.

The natural stone is created more than two kilometers below the earth's surface by the slow solidification of liquid magma (rock melting) and is therefore one of the so-called igneous rocks. Its name is derived from the Latin "Granum", which means "grain". Granite is found all over the world and can be 20 to 400 million years old = ". The older the stone, the better its technical properties such as density, flexural strength and abrasion resistance. The size of the stone slabs varies depending on the variety and occurrence and can be up to twelve meters long.

Look and types of granite worktops

Granite worktops come in a wide range of colors, with many different drawings and from different countries of origin. Their composition is based on irregularly arranged mineral grains such as quartz, feldspar and mica. The color depends on the components and regional conditions at the mining site, the palette ranges from light gray and blue to brown to yellow or red. While gray and red granite are quite cheap, blue and anthracite-colored stones often have a considerable price. The most important characteristic for real granite is a quartz share of at least 20 percent. As a real natural product, each granite stone is unique, which gives the kitchen an extra portion of individuality. Granite is directionless, so it has no grain, its typical texture can range from pepper and salt grain to fist-sized stains.

The most popular types of granite include:

  • Epprechtstein granite from Bavaria
  • Knaupsholz granite from the resin
  • Bohus Grau Tossene from Sweden
  • Petras Salgadas from Portugal

By the way: Black granite does not exist in its natural form. Mostly it is the deep stone "Gabbro", for example in the melodious variants "Nero Assoluto", "Star Galaxy" or "Belfast Black". It is often used when a black work surface with granite-like properties is desired.

Black worktops look particularly elegant and of high quality. Tiefenstein Gabbro is used for this because the color does not appear among the natural granite stones.

Cost of granite countertops

Due to the large variety of granite worktops, the price range of the different qualities also varies significantly. In addition to the country of origin, mining and processing as well as the hardness of the deep rock influence the price. Exclusive and limited available granite worktops can cost up to several thousand euros per square meter, while granite from China or India is already available for a few euros per square meter. When buying, it should always be ensured that the granite is produced fairly.

The hard natural stone is sustainable in any case: a granite worktop lasts an average of 25 years. The strength of the plate also plays a role in the price. Two-centimeter-thick panels are available from retailers starting at around 60 euros per square meter. As a rule of thumb, the more blue the granite contains, the higher the price. Granite in shades of gray is comparatively cheap.

Maintenance of the granite worktop

One of the many advantages of granite worktops is that they are particularly insensitive and therefore do not require extensive maintenance. So that the natural stone can shine in its most beautiful splendor for as long as possible, it should be regularly impregnated with a special agent, depending on the use, roughly every six to twelve months. Ideally, the granite should simply be wiped off with a damp cloth after use. But be careful: chemicals, limescale removers and vinegar-based cleaning agents can attack the surface of the granite and make it dull, abrasive cleaners can even permanently damage it. In the case of heavy soiling, special cleaners help that are tailored precisely to the needs of the granite. Regular polishing with special stone oils lets the surface shine for a long time.
