Given the current corona crisis you see more and more people with face masks. How well they protect against potential infection is controversial. Nevertheless, more and more medical professionals are now advising to wear a face mask in public. Here we show how you can sew it yourself.

Virologists assume that a mouthguard is particularly useful if you are infected yourself and could infect others. Some want to protect themselves from infection with a mask. However, since the demand for professional face masks can no longer be met and hospital staff in particular are dependent on them, everyone else should sew protective masks themselves. Klaus Reinhardt, President of the German Medical Association (BAEK), said to the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (NOZ): "My advice: Get simple protective masks or make your own and wear them in public spaces. These masks do not guarantee protection against infection. But they can help a little to reduce the risk of infecting others or getting infected yourself. They are better than nothing because they filter the air we breathe.”An obvious plus point that self-sewn masks also bring with them: They prevent you from accidentally touching your mouth or nose while on the move. Important: Make sure that the mask fits well. If you have to constantly adjust them, often face yourself, which could be counterproductive.

It is best to use tightly woven cotton for your face mask.

A face mask doesn't always have to be blue. Choose fabrics with patterns and colors, that makes a change.

This is a do it yourself guide for making a makeshift mouth and nose mask. There is none

Certification or testing for effectiveness. The mask is manufactured and used

therefore at your own risk.

  • Tape measure or hand measure
  • Pins, tailor's chalk

Prepare the following material for sewing the mouthguard and cut out the cut paper.

Step by step instructions for sewing a mouthguard

Step 1: prepare the fabric

Wash the fabric before processing and put it in the dryer, if available. The advantage: the fabric can no longer shrink the first time it is washed and contains no unwanted additives. Then iron the fabric smooth. The "beautiful" fabric side is the right side of the fabric and later points outwards.

Step 2: sift through the face mask material

It is best to sew the mask with a sewing machine. If you have a little patience, you can also sew them together by hand. Cut out the paper cut pieces in your size. If you want different sizes, you should copy the size using tissue paper or copy paper. Good to know: The cut parts include a centimeter seam allowance. So you have to sew a centimeter from the edge later.

S babies / children (small)

M children (normal) / adults (small)

L adults (normal)

XL adults (large)

Step 3: Cut the protective mask parts

Fold the fabric in half, the right side of the fabric must face inwards. Then place the paper cut part 1 on the double-folded fabric (with the label facing up) and draw along the edge of the paper with chalk or a pencil. Then cut out on the drawn lines and cut the seam allowances in the small lines about 3 millimeters. Then you can cut the parts for the lining and the insert with pattern 2 in the same way. Finally, cut off the insert parts along the top and bottom edges a centimeter so that they fit well into the mask later.

Step 4: close the center seam

Remove the paper cut parts, but leave the fabric parts on top of each other. Then sew the parts on top of each other at the round center seam at a distance of one centimeter from the edge. Then cut back the seam allowances to a width of five millimeters. On the curves, you can also cut the allowances slightly in the direction of the seam. Do not cut into the seam under any circumstances! Then the additions can be ironed apart. Sew the center seam on the lining and the insert in the same way.

Step 5: topstitch the center seam

Stitch the apart seam allowances on all parts (outer mask, lining and insert) on both sides of the center seam at a distance of two millimeters. This will make the seam flatter.

Step 6: Sew the lining sides around

On the lining, finish the additions on the narrow side with a zigzag or overlock stitch. Then iron them about 1 centimeter wide and sew them in place.

Step 7: double the protective mask

Place the lining on the right side of the mask so that the "beautiful" sides are on the inside. Now put the top and bottom edges of the protective mask and lining on top of each other (the center seams meet each other). Sew them together at a distance of one centimeter from the edge. Then apply the mask (the beautiful side is now on the outside) and iron the top and bottom edges flat. Iron the not yet fixed seam allowance at the end of the two edges flat. Then stitch along the top and bottom edges seven millimeters (sewing machine feet wide) to the end of the mask.

Step 8: sew a tunnel for the rubber band

Iron the side allowances of the protective mask 1.5 centimeters wide inwards (the small incisions indicate the width) and sew them on at a distance of one centimeter from the edge.

The rubber bands are later pulled through the tunnel to fix the mouthguard.

Step 9: pull in the rubber bands

Cut the rubber band into two parts of equal length. Use the small safety pin to pull the rubber bands into the side openings. Then lay the rubber band ends on top of each other in the right length for you and fix them with a safety pin. This way, the rubber bands can be removed before washing.

Step 10: pull in the wire

Cut a piece about 16 centimeters long from the wire and bend the ends. Push the wire through the tunnel of the top edge (space between the top edge and the stitching). When you put the mask on, press the wire to your face. This way you can see whether the mask is optimally positioned. Insert the insert laterally between the outer mask and the inner lining. Before washing, you can remove the rubber bands, the wire and the insert.

This will keep the mask clean

Always keep the mask dry. After wearing the mask, you should take it off carefully and avoid touching the fabric sides. After use, it is recommended to wash the mask (at least once a day at at least 60 degrees). Before doing so, however, you should remove the insert and then let it dry completely.
