What is regrowing and how does it work?

Regrowing means to grow back. With this sowing method, vegetable waste is recycled so that new vegetables can grow out of it. Simply place the stalk, neck, or shoot in a container filled with water. Here they linger for a few days until new roots or leaves sprout. Then the vegetables can be transferred to a pot filled with soil. An exception applies to onions - these remain in the water.

Why is regrowing worthwhile?

How many times have you bought herbs and ultimately only needed half? Since herbs do not stay fresh forever, regrowing is particularly suitable here for home-grown. Last but not least, a sustainable lifestyle is an issue of increasing relevance. With Regrowing you start with your own consumption behavior and can make a small contribution.

Which vegetables are suitable for regrowing?

For beginners, basil, mint, garlic, spring onions or lettuce are suitable for regrowing. If you have already achieved success with this, you can also try coriander, lemongrass, Chinese cabbage or avocado. Did that also work? Then you are a true regrow professional and can even make sweet potatoes, ginger, pineapple or galangal.

Basil is particularly suitable for regrowing. After just a few days you can see the first roots on the shoot.

  1. Cut a 5-10 cm long shoot, pluck off the lower leaves. Put the shoot in a glass with water.
  2. Place glass on a bright windowsill so that new roots can form. Change water every 2-3 days.
  3. Plant the shoot in a pot of soil after 2-3 weeks. Keep the soil moist by watering it regularly.

After regular watering, the leaves of the garlic vegetables can be used like wild garlic.

  1. Put soil in a 10 liter pot with drainage holes. Insert 3 cloves of garlic and cover them 3–5 cm with soil.
  2. Place the pot on a bright windowsill so that the toes sprout. Keep the soil moist by watering it regularly.
  3. As soon as the leaves are long enough, cut them off and use them as garlic vegetables such as wild garlic.

Lettuce is also suitable for regrowing. To do this, cut the piece off and place it in a flat glass filled with water.

  1. Cut off the stalk (approx. 5 cm high), place the cut in a flat glass container filled with water.
  2. Place the container in a bright location (e.g. window sill). The trunk should always be half covered with water.
  3. As soon as new roots and fresh green leaves form on top, plant in a pot filled with soil.

  1. Place the lower roots and roots in a glass container filled with water. (Cut surface above the water surface).
  2. Place the glass jar on a bright windowsill so that the green can grow. Change water every 1-2 days.
  3. Shorten green stems and recycle in the kitchen as usual. Let the rest drift in the glass jar.

What should I watch out for when regrowing?

Use only young and, above all, healthy plant parts for regrowing. So that the plants do not start to rot, regularly renew the water in the glass. When moving to a pot, plant the offspring in soil. A substrate made from pressed coconut fiber blocks is also suitable. You should always keep the soil slightly moist. Depending on the plant, the needs for the location differ. In general, however, a bright, warm place of around 20 degrees Celsius is recommended, such as a window sill.

Is there a recipe for success in regrowing?

Be patient: allow your protégés to rest during the rooting phase and do not pull the shoots out of the soil so that the root tissue is not destroyed.
