Lime builds up in a washing machine and in its hoses over time, which can cause real technical problems and increased power consumption in the long term. The reason for this is that the lime deposits on the heating elements of the washing machine and therefore significantly more energy has to be applied to heat it. But with our instructions and tips you can free your machine from it.

Why do I have to descale the washing machine?

In addition to the increased power consumption, which starts with just five millimeters of lime, there are other reasons why you should descale your lime machine. A calcified washing machine can no longer clean properly. In addition, the deposits cause more frequent defects and, in the worst case, can completely shut down the machine.

How often should you descale the washing machine?

How often you should use the decalcifier depends on various factors. The amount of lime in the water in Germany differs greatly from region to region. The degree of hardness is a measured value for this. To find out how soft or hard the water is in your place of residence, you can call up the details of your water provider online. The higher the value, the more lime is in the water and the more often you should descale your washing machine. The frequency of use also plays a role. Anyone who has the washing machine in continuous operation as a family of four should descale much more often.

Basically, it is recommended to descale your washing machine about three times a year if the water is hard.

With soft water, this process is enough.

Good to know: Although there is decalcifier in the heavy-duty detergent powder, none can

loosen existing lime. It only ensures that no additional limescale deposits form.

Overview of degrees of hardness

The Detergent and Cleaning Agents Act has divided water hardness into the following three grades since 2007:

Hardness range soft = up to 8.4 ° dH

Medium hardness range = 8.4 to 14 ° dH

Hardness range hard = more than 14 ° dH

Descale the washing machine: home remedies or chemical descaler?

There are many different chemical decalcifiers on the market, most of which are offered in the form of tabs, as powder or in liquid form. They are usually more expensive than home remedies, but they have the advantage that they are much easier and more precise to use. The instructions for use usually explain exactly how and where the product is to be used - you don't have to estimate and try it out here. If you choose chemical decalcifying agents, you should be aware that they are much less environmentally and health friendly than home remedies.

Descale the washing machine correctly with household products

The more environmentally friendly variant are home remedies such as vinegar or citric acid. But beware! Both are very aggressive acids that must be dosed correctly, otherwise they can attack small parts of the machine, but also seals. Usually either vinegar or citric acid are used.

Vinegar: Only suitable for cold decalcification, as corrosive vapors can develop when heated, which are harmful to the eyes and mucous membrane.

Citric acid: This home remedy is not as aggressive as chemical products, but reliably removes lime and does not generate any corrosive vapors when used.

Tip: Vinegar has a strong descaling effect, but you should still use citric acid. Vinegar also spreads a pungent smell that can be transferred to freshly washed laundry. In addition, the risk of citric acid attacking rubber or silicone is much lower.

Household tips Cleaning the washing machine: These home remedies work Clean your washing machine regularly to prevent dirt, mold and unpleasant smells. We explain how to do it.

How to use citric acid

Put about 7 to 10 tablespoons of the citric acid directly into the drum. Then set the washing machine to the highest washing temperature and let it run through a complete wash cycle without laundry. Washing machines with a pause function should remain in stand-by mode for at least one, better two, so that the citric acid can work well.

Alternative dishwasher tab

If you don't have citric acid at hand, you can also put two dishwasher tablets in the drum if necessary. Again, refrain from filling the machine. Then set the highest water temperature and start idling. Then the washing machine should be free of limescale.
