Symbols: Suitable for the dishwasher or dishwasher safe?

This symbol means: dishwasher safe

Bowls, cutting boards and the like often have a symbol directly on the product or on the packaging, which means that the item is dishwasher-safe. The sign does not always look identical, but it always shows a dishwasher, sometimes with water drops or jets. The manufacturers themselves decide whether the symbol is printed. What exactly means "dishwasher-safe" is not defined in a binding manner. It is possible that dishes with this symbol will be damaged over time by washing the machine.

This symbol means: dishwasher safe

The most reliable is the following symbol: a water jet, which is framed on the right and below, with a number above it. The symbol stands for "dishwasher safe" and means that the dishes have been tested according to DIN standard 12875. The number indicates how often the item can be put in the dishwasher without being damaged.

Often misinterpreted

A symbol that is often found on cans, dishes and Co. across the EU is often misinterpreted: a glass with a fork behind it. This symbol has nothing to do with the dishwasher. Instead, it means that the material can come into contact with food.

This is suitable for the dishwasher

  • Baseball cap: The cap is not in good hands in the washing machine because it deforms quickly. In the dishwasher, on the other hand, the accessory is stored - without printing! - protected and becomes free of dirt and stains again. However, make sure that your dishwasher tabs do not contain any bleach and choose a program with a lower temperature.
  • Sponge: Kitchen sponges are a paradise for bacteria and should therefore be replaced at least once a week. You can clean them together with your dishes in the dishwasher at a minimum of 60 degrees. Simply wring it out after washing and let it dry.
  • Plastic toys: Bacteria and pathogens like to frolic on the favorites of children - or dogs. If the toy has no hair, it can usually be cleaned in the dishwasher. But pay attention to the information provided by the manufacturer. If the plastic is not suitable for the dishwasher, the heat could release harmful substances.
  • Toothbrush tumblers or plastic soap dishes: These can be in the dishwasher, but should be in the upper compartment, as they are less exposed to heat there.
  • Dishwashing brush: So that the plastic brushes become hygienically clean again: into the machine! This also removes discoloration.
  • Extractor hood: You can also clean the metal filter of the extractor hood in the dishwasher to effectively remove grease and the like. But be careful: too much fat can cause blockages in the dishwasher - if necessary, clean the filter beforehand by hand.

Limit case: Can silver cutlery and the like be put in the dishwasher?

Silver cutlery is perfectly suitable for the dishwasher - but not in every case. If it is covered with a protective varnish, it must not be put in the dishwasher. Also take a look at the hallmark, the number that is stamped very small on the silver. 800 silver should not end up in the dishwasher. It is particularly prone to discoloration. Other hallmarks, such as 925 silver, are dishwasher-safe, but there are also conditions.

It depends on what is in the dishwasher together with the silver cutlery. Silver and stainless steel cutlery or cutlery must never touch in the dishwasher. Otherwise the silver will change color. If possible, clean both in separate rinse cycles, if necessary, a spatial separation in the dishwasher is sufficient - one comes up, the other down. You should not have silverware washed together with aluminum dishes either. It doesn't matter to silver, but discoloration occurs with aluminum. Pure aluminum should generally not be put in the dishwasher, as it can discolour - alloys can be clean. If you want, you can put the silver cutlery on a special aluminum plate from the shop in the dishwasher. This ensures shine, prevents stains from flash rust and may discolour quietly.

If there is silver in the dishwasher, it is better to set a low temperature program. Attention also when choosing the powder or the tabs. The product should be suitable for silver. However, the silver protection agent benzotriatol (BTA) pollutes the groundwater according to the Stiftung Warentest. In their test, Claro dishwashing tablets proved to be the only environmentally friendly variant that protects silver cutlery well.

Rarely a good idea: put pans in the dishwasher

Many pans are not dishwasher safe. If they are made of cast aluminum, they quickly turn black and stain. Teflon and cast iron are also taboo. Non-stick coatings can also lose their properties due to water jets and cleaning agents.

Are garlic presses dishwasher-safe?

Kitchen utensils made of pure aluminum such as garlic or potato presses do not belong in the dishwasher. Reason: the aluminum becomes matt and furry. Alloyed aluminum can be put into the dishwasher. Look at the information on the product!

Attention, if plastic objects discolor or get scratches

If you observe either of these two phenomena after the plastic has been in the dishwasher, it is better not to put this plastic can in the future. There are signs that plasticizers are detaching from the product.

Sharp knives suffer in the dishwasher

It is better not to clean good knife blades in the machine! The salt attacks the metal, in the worst case it will cause corrosion, i.e. decomposition of the metal. In addition, the blades in the dishwasher can become stained, rusty or dull. This also applies to graters and planes. Wooden handles on knives could loosen due to the rinse cycle in the machine.

Which glasses are not allowed in the dishwasher?

Crystal glasses and frosted glass should be kept away from the dishwasher. Glasses and cups that are hand-painted or printed with photos or have a gold rim could also be damaged in the machine. With thin glasses, you risk breaking them.

Watch out for ceramics

Only products that are explicitly marked as dishwasher-safe should end up in the dishwasher. Otherwise you risk that the glazing or even the ceramic itself will burst.

Dishwashers damage wood

Dining or cutting boards and wooden spoons have no place in the dishwasher. The long water bath swells, warps and breaks the wood. The same applies to cork and bamboo. Wicked: Bacteria have an easy time in cracks.

It is better to rinse thermos flasks and insulated cups by hand

Rinsing cycles in the machine are increasingly damaging the seal. This can result in the product no longer keeping drinks warm.

Protect decorated porcelain

Decors and gold edges on porcelain fade over time or are completely removed. It is therefore better to wash the good dishes by hand. You can safely leave glazed white porcelain without decoration, which is not particularly delicate, to the dishwasher.

The numbers and lines on the measuring cup fade more and more the more you put the kitchen aid in the dishwasher.
