Many models can also be networked with a smartphone or tablet, so that you can read out information on networking, battery and operating status via the app. WLAN smoke detectors go one step further and provide information on the development of smoke via a push message on the smartphone, for example when you are at work or on vacation. What are the disadvantages of a networked smoke detector?

In principle, networked smoke detectors are a DIN-standardized smoke detectors with an additional radio module. The important basic functions and safety elements, such as the 10-year battery, therefore remain in place. So there is no real disadvantage, apart from the price, perhaps.

Depending on the radio standard used by the provider, the radio module eats up a relatively large amount of energy. That is why some smart home smoke detectors are equipped with an additional battery. The endurance of this second battery is usually no more than five years. When purchasing the fire alarm device, pay attention to the specified battery life so that the extended functions remain in place over the entire life cycle. The smoke detector app will always inform you as soon as the battery needs to be replaced. You should also be aware that the smartphone connection only works if the WiFi network is intact. The smart functions are therefore not completely fail-safe.

How do I network a radio smoke detector?

To network the smoke detector, the supplied radio module must be inserted into the smoke detector - unless the smoke detector is already equipped with an integrated radio module. Next, the smoke detectors are placed at the installation locations, first on the floor. Here you can network the instructions accordingly. A coding key on the device usually has to be pressed to establish the radio connection. The smoke detector automatically contacts the smoke detectors in the area. Now the smoke detectors can be screwed to the wall or attached to the ceiling with double-sided adhesive tape.

If you want to network a smoke detector with an app connection, you have to download the corresponding app. The smoke detector is linked to the main system in just a few steps and can interact with all networked smoke detectors. With extended models, you can selectively group selected smoke detectors into a group, so that only the "members" of this group emit an alarm tone if one of the associated smoke alarms detects smoke.

For smoke detectors that are part of a smart home system, you usually need an additional gateway that is connected to the Internet router. Here, the communication does not run directly via the WLAN router, but via a switching bridge that interconnects all smart home devices.

How do I connect a wired smoke detector?

If you want to network a smoke detector via cable, you will find a connection for the two-wire connection cable on the back. It is important that you follow the instructions of the respective system.
