No matter whether cracks, quirks or discoloration - no floor covering lasts forever. Of course, this also applies to tiles. However, since tiles are one of the most difficult to remove and therefore replace, many do-it-yourselfers shy away from the workload and instead live with the unsightly floor. This need not be. A simple solution is to lay laminate on tiles. Since click laminate is laid floating - that means it does not have to be screwed or glued - it is particularly suitable for covering an old floor.

Removing old tiles is a lot of work. As an alternative, you can simply lay laminate on top of it.

Laminate on tiles: this has to be considered

Before you lay laminate on your tiles, you should make sure that the surface is flat and has no cracks. If you live for rent, you should lay the laminate in consultation with the landlord.

  • There should not be more than a two millimeter difference in height between the tiles, the so-called offset. Borrow a long spirit level and check it carefully. Because if there are more than two millimeters from one end of the room to the other, you have to lay another floor covering on the tiles or even completely redo the floor yourself. Sometimes it also helps to apply leveling compound on the tiles. Attention: This leveling compound cannot be removed from the tiles later.
  • If you find cracks in the tiles and know for sure that nothing fell on the tiles at that point, then these cracks are most likely a sign that the expansion joint is missing or something is wrong with the screed. You must seal these cracks in the tiles with resin before laying the laminate.
  • Crumbled tiles or pieces that are missing whole pieces must be replaced before you can lay the laminate over them. Otherwise the surface is not stable enough for the new flooring.
  • Use a test panel to check in advance whether you can still open and close the doors with the new floor covering. Because tiled floors plus laminate result in a fairly good floor height - and if necessary the doors and the thresholds have to be adjusted.

Important for laminate on tiles: vapor barrier and impact sound insulation

If you lay laminate, you must first lay out a so-called vapor barrier on the tiles. Say: a polyethylene film (PE film). This is simply placed loosely on the tiles as if you wanted to cover the tiles to paint the walls. The PE film on the walls should protrude ten centimeters. If you lay the vapor barrier in sheets, you should let it overlap between 20 and 40 centimeters.

This also applies to laminate, which can be installed in the bathroom and kitchen. No moisture penetrates through the tiles themselves, but the joints let moisture through. If you have underfloor heating, you must make sure that the type of laminate is suitable for underfloor heating and, if necessary, also adhere to other specifications of the laminate manufacturer and the manufacturer of the heating.

Then there is the impact sound insulation as an intermediate layer. Because even if the tiles are already under the laminate, the sound of the steps is passed on without impact sound insulation. The insulation should be laid butt-to-butt, i.e. edge to edge, and not overlapping. In the case of underfloor heating, you should also ensure that the product you have selected is compatible with the heating.

The next step in laying your new laminate on the old tiles is to plan for an expansion joint of 1 to 1.5 centimeters from the wall towards the room and to stake them out with small pieces of wood or spacers. You should not skip this step either, because without an expansion joint there can be unsightly wide joints between the panels and cracks in the laminate.

Laying laminate on tiles without preparation does not work. Before that, you need a vapor barrier and impact sound insulation.

What needs to be considered when laying the laminate?

The new laminate flooring must acclimate to the room in which it is to be installed at least 24 hours before installation. That means: put it down there and cut open the packaging. You can use the waiting time of the best two days to consider how exactly the laminate should be laid. The positioning of the panels can make a room appear larger, smaller, deeper or even more compressed. Positioning the laminate across the long side makes the room appear more elegant. For smaller or square-shaped rooms, make sure to lay the laminate along the incidence of light. Quasi as an extension of the incoming sunlight.

Laminate with click system is easier to process from left to right. The first laminate panel must be positioned correctly and straight, because the entire floor is laid around it - should you make a mistake with the first panel, the entire new covering will be faulty. But: no pressure. It is best to take it easy and relaxed as a handyman. Then fewer mistakes will happen.

The following panels are sawn to the appropriate size and then struck lengthways on the panel already lying with the hammer. Each laminate panel should also be “hammered in” crosswise with the matchstick - in the sense of: the click systems hammered into each other. Especially those from the second row so that they can be easily clicked on with the panels of the first and later the third row.

With the help of a laminate adjuster, you can cut and lay without any problems.

Tip: If you regularly clean and maintain the laminate, you will rarely need to repair or repair the laminate!
