Anyone who has ever installed internal doors cannot transfer the procedure 1: 1 to the front door. Because they have different requirements, after all, front doors are the direct dividing line between the house and the outside, are exposed to everyday use, have to meet energy requirements and also look good. Front doors must be sturdy and firmly installed, which is why the door leaf is in a metal frame, which is fixed in the masonry with long frame anchors and not simply clamped and fixed with mounting foam as with room doors. The installation of a front door is like a mixture of room door and window, which you can also fix in the masonry.

Think about it before installing a front door

Before you start, measure the height and width of the old front door or the wall opening for the front door - and always in at least two places. Check with the spirit level that the reveal is straight. When measuring, also determine how the old front door is installed and how the new one should be arranged: the door can be installed in the middle of the reveal or it can be flush with the opening in the wall and then flush with the inner wall.

When determining the height and width of the front door, one sometimes encounters the so-called built-in air, i.e. an additional distance of at least one centimeter between the door frame and the wall. This enables you to compensate for possible material expansion. Depending on the manufacturer, the built-in air can be between one and two centimeters and can already be included in the dimensions.

The opening direction of the front door

Like all doors, there are also front doors as so-called "DIN left" or "DIN right", which means the opening direction of the door. Open a door in the "DIN Right" direction with your right hand in the direction of the right shoulder, with "DIN Left" it is exactly the opposite.

Instructions: Install a front door step by step

In addition to the usual tools, you need the following for the new front door:

  • Frame dowel
  • Sealing tapes
  • Pu foam
  • Plastic wedges
  • Ideally, assembly cushions for easy alignment and temporary fastening of the door frame

Step 1: get rid of the old door

Take the door leaf out of the hinges, saw the frame and remove all mounting screws from the wall. The wall or soffit is usually battered because you can only get the remains of the attachment points of the old door out of the wall with a hammer and chisel. Compensate any quirks and holes created with deep primer and masonry and plastering mortar, which is best mixed with quick binders for faster drying.

Step 2: visual inspection and painting of the new front door

To bridge the time until the plaster dries, check the new front door for damage. A new front door always arrives locked. Lean the door against a wall, open it and check everything for scratches and other damage. Some wooden doors have to be painted with protective glaze or varnish. You can find out from the manufacturer whether this is the case. Before installing these, you can paint the door - but then let it dry completely. Take out the door leaf of the new door, mount the lock and the fittings and start with the installation.

With wooden doors it may be necessary to paint them with a protective glaze beforehand. Find out about this before installing the front door!

Step 3: prepare the frame

If the door frame does not yet have any holes for the fastening screws, drill these 10 centimeters from the corners and then another every 50 to 60 centimeters. That can vary depending on the manufacturer. Depending on the manufacturer, the cover frame is taped with sealing tape or a vapor barrier before installation. It is best to do this after you have drilled the holes for the frame dowels in the wall. When aligning the frame, the film is otherwise in the way. Only if the manufacturer recommends, do you apply the film immediately.

Step 4: install the frame for the front door

Test the door frame in the reveal and mark the position of the lower part of the frame, i.e. the later threshold on the floor. Align the frame exactly and fix it with wooden wedges or alternatively with assembly cushions that exert pressure on the frame when inflated. Now use a stone drill to drill the fastening holes for the frame dowels into the masonry - through the frame. Drill all holes on the hinge side, the lowest on the door lock side and all for the threshold. Depending on the design of the wall and frame, different frame anchors and screws can be used.

Do not screw the frame yet, but take it out again, stick on the sealing tapes according to the manufacturer's instructions and blow out the drill holes. Otherwise the dowels will not hold.

Step 5: Screw on the frame and hang the door leaf

Insert the frame dowels, but do not screw the frame tight yet. First there are plastic wedges all around on the hinge side between the wall and the door frame, which has so far been temporarily fixed with wooden wedges or assembly cushions. This means that the frame can no longer move when it is finally installed and tightened. These wedges are foamed in and remain in place. Always clamp two wedges against each other from both sides. Any excess comes away. It is best to mark the protrusion and cut the wedge to length separately. Screw the threshold into place using direct fastening screws. Do the same with the lower frame dowel on the lock side of the front door.

Hang the door leaf and check whether it closes cleanly and smoothly. If nothing needs to be corrected, drill the remaining mounting holes on the side of the door lock and at the top of the frame, again insert plastic wedges and finally screw the door frame in place.

Step 6: seal the front door after installation

After installing the front door, the joints are sealed again: observe the manufacturer's instructions. A common procedure is to glue the previously applied vapor diffusion film or the sealing tape to the reveal with special adhesive and to foam the space between the wall and the door.
