It is possible that in the past you have sent an SMS to receive a tone or other different content, and then you realized that your bill had risen considerably. Well, now the CNMC has published 10 fraudulent premium SMS numbers, due to the fine that it has been forced to impose for its irregular use.

The CNMC (National Commission for Markets and Competition) is now the Spanish communications regulator. It has been noticed that some companies had requested premium numbers, but they used them in a different way than they had indicated, for which they did not have authorization.

The result is fines for 5 companies, of different amounts depending on each offence, but which together exceed 860,000 euros. Premium SMS may not be as serious a problem today as it was a few years ago, but it is important to continue acting.

Irregular use

The CNMC accuses these companies of not directly offering the content that customers requested. After the first message, responded with different requests, so that the user had to send more paid premium SMS.

It should be noted that they were not subscription services in which the number was added to an SMS sending list that they were charged. These premium SMS were punctual, so companies designed this system to increase their revenue.

So the CNMC publishes 10 fraudulent premium SMS numbers, an important measure, but it is not enough. The Spanish communications sector needs a lot of supervision, because there is no shortage of problems, and public bodies must make an effort to solve them.

What do you think of these premium SMS fraudulent numbers? Have you used any in the past, or have you not been affected by this hoax?
