Huawei P40 Pro, first impressions

Huawei has just presented its new flagships such as the P40, the P40 Pro and the P40 Pro+. On this occasion, we have already been able to test the Huawei P40 Pro in order to discover all its novelties in these first impressionsof the smartphone.

First of all, we must mention that we are dealing with one of the three terminals presented today, which include the Huawei P40, the P40 Pro and the P40 Pro+. Next, let's see what this new Huawei P40 Pro hides.

Totally different design

The new Huawei P40 Pro offers a totally different design from its direct predecessor, the Huawei P30 Pro, and also different from the Huawei Mate 30 Pro.

At first glance, it looks great offering a feeling robust while being premium, although like the vast majority of mobiles current, it has a very "dirty" back, where fingerprints and dirt are very marked.

On the front of the terminal, we see a front camera made up of two sensors whose design is really similar to the Samsung Galaxy S10+. On the front we do not see anything beyond the screen, since the speaker to answer calls is located on the inside of the glass.

At the bottom we see the tray to insert the SIM card, and remember that it is a 5G smartphone It also has the possibility of expanding storage through Huawei's proprietary NM cards. We also find the microphone that will pick up the audio during calls and a speaker.

In the upper zone there is a microphone, which will be in charge of picking up the audio while we make recordings, and ainfrared emitter which will be useful to realize the remote control function.

On the right side of the Huawei P40 Pro we see the power button in red and thebuttons volume up and down.

The left edge of the device is completely clean, free of any type of connection.

Huawei P40 Pro, specifications

We already anticipate that it is a really complete high-end smartphone, let's see what's inside the P40 Pro.

8. Ports and sensors: USB type C and on-screen fingerprint reader.
9. Battery: 4,200 mAh with 40 W fast charging.
10. Extras: IP68 certification against water and dust.
11. Operating system: Android 10 with EMUI 10.1.

Four off-road cameras and two front cameras

The P40 Pro, like other Huawei terminals, comes equipped with multiple rear cameras. In this case, the configuration that Huawei has chosen for the renewal of the P range is the following:

1. 50 MP main sensor with Quad Pixel technology, 1.9 focal aperture and RYYB sensor.
2. 40 MP Wide Angle "Cinema Wide", specialized in video.
3. 12 MP telephoto lens "Super Sensing" with 5x zoom with a focal aperture of 3.4.
4. Depth sensor ToF type (time-of-flight).

As we can see, as far as the photographic aspect is concerned, Huawei would be offering great versatility with a zoom of up to 50x.

All the sensors would be signed by Leica, which in principle would ensure a good photographic result.

The front camera consists of two sensors:

1. 32 MP main sensor with a focal aperture of 2.2.
2. Depth sensor, to achieve better results in frontal portrait mode and increase the security of facial recognition.

In addition, there is an infrared sensor that would also do double duty. In this case, in night situations the results would be better because it would capture more information and we could unlock our mobile in the dark.

These sensors would offer us the possibility to record in 4K at 60 fps in both the front and rear cameras. Another possibility would be to record slow motion at up to 7680 fps, which is really amazing on a smartphone.

It should be noted that all the sensors included in the P40 Pro are equipped with 3rd generation artificial intelligence, which means that They recognize scenes and objects in order to automatically adjust the camera parameters and try to achieve the best result.

We will have to wait for the review to find out if all the sensors are up to the task and if they are capable of surpassing the result obtained in the previous generation.

90 Hz Screen

Huawei has decided to join the high refresh rate displays with a 90 Hz panel. The screen of the Huawei P40 Pro is 6.58 inches and has a FullHD+ resolution (2,640 x 1,200 pixels), built with OLED technology.

The screen, like the body, is covered with glass. Colors are vibrant and rich in their variety. It is a panel that surprises at first sight, although we must delve into how it behaves and offer a verdict in the review.

The Huawei P40 Pro has a fingerprint sensor built into the screen, the location where the Chinese firm has decided to integrate it is something below the middle of the panel. They claim that this new fingerprint sensor is 30% faster than its predecessor.

Unlocking using facial recognition is instantaneous and we can configure it to activate as soon as we pick up the phone.

The only problem on the screen is that it has little space at the top due to the placement of the front cameras.

There is the status bar with coverage, activated sensors, notifications… so it could be too much information in too little space, although we must first test how notification management works.

Software without Google services

It is probably one of the most delicate sections of the P40 family because, before you even take it out of the box, it already They tell us to explore App Gallery, Huawei's application store, so we already imagined that it would not incorporate Google services.

On the other hand, it has its own tool that makes our task easier and will make some of our old Android applications compatible In principle, It seems that the options we saw to install the Google Play Store on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro would not be worth it and we will have to look for another system.

The customization layer that is integrated into the Huawei P40 Pro is EMUI in its version 10.1, based on Android 10.

Hardware at a high level

Huawei has decided to integrate the latest model of its own processors, the Kirin 990 5G, into the P40 Pro. It is a 8-core processor divided as follows: 2 Cortex A76 cores at 2.86 GHz, 2 Cortex A76 cores at 2.36 GHz and 4 Cortex A55 cores at 1.95 GHz.

The GPU that integrates the new terminal of the Chinese firm is the GPU Mali G76 MC16.

The P40 Pro would be available in a version of 8 GB of RAM accompanied by 256 GB of UFS 3.0 storage, which will ensure greater speed when moving files within the phone and opening apps.

The battery of this Huawei P40 Pro is 4,200 mAh, accompanied by a quick charge of 40 W, wireless charging and reversible wireless charging, that is, we can charge other devices through the back of the P40 Pro.

The Huawei P40 Pro integrates NFC, although it will only be used to make mobile payments with those banks that have their own application on inside the App Gallery.

Price and availability

As we mentioned, the Huawei P40 Pro has just been presented and its release date would be in April The colors in which it would be available the P40 Pro would be the following: Black (black), Ice White (white), Deep Sea Blue (blue), Silver Frost (silver) and Blush Gold (gradient rose gold).

The new Huawei P40 Pro will be sold in a single version with 8 GB of RAM + 256 GB of storage at a price of 999 euros, available from 7 April in Spain.
