When we think of a good, beautiful and cheap mobile, Xiaomi always comes to mind, or failing that, the Redmi sub-brand. In this case we are going to compare the Redmi Note 9S with the Redmi Note 8.
In general terms, and before going into the heart of the matter, we must say that they are mobile phones that are very on par in terms of design, innovation, technical specifications, etc.
In this comparison we are going to break down each terminal, but it will be you, the readers, who decide which is the best, and we want to see your opinion in the comments of this article or on our social networks.
Screen, one step above

There are a few months difference between one terminal and another, and that time can be seen in the components that each terminal includes. Specifically, the Redmi Note 8 came out in August 2019 and the Redmi Note 9S was released in March 2020, yes, in full confinement due to the coronavirus.
We say that the screen is one step above because the technical characteristics of each screen are as follows, and it is obvious which one is one step ahead:
- Redmi Note 8: 6.3-inch IPS panel at 60Hz, with 19 aspect ratio, 5:9, a ratio of 90%, an FHD resolution and a notch in the shape of a drop of water where the selfie camera is housed.
- Redmi Note 9S: a 6.67-inch IPS LCD panel at 60 Hz, in 20:9 format, a ratio of 90.1%, with FHD resolution, say goodbye to the notch because we have a perforated selfie camera on the screen and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection.
Both allow facial recognition, and neither of them have a fingerprint reader on the screen, although we will talk about this in another section later.
Processor, the heart of each terminal

Here, too, there is a clear difference between the Redmi Note 9S and Redmi Note 8. The former features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G, while the latter features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665.
In both cases the versions of RAM and ROM are the same, that is to say 4 GB or 6 GB of RAM, and 64 GB or 128 GB of ROM. The only thing that changes is that in the case of the Redmi Note 9S the storage can be expanded by MicroSD up to 512 GB.
These two terminals will allow us to enjoy mobile video games, storage of photos, applications, videos, social networks and endless options since they are mid-range, but very complete.
Battery for a day
In the case of the Redmi Note 8 we have a 4,000 mAh battery with fast charging at 18 W and in the case of the Redmi Note 9S we have 5,020 mAh with fast charging at 18 W.
In both cases we have a battery capable of withstanding intense use and reach the end of the day, in addition, thanks to fast charging we can have 50% of the battery in just over 30 minutes.
These are data that, a priori, are not of vital importance, but from experience, a good battery is better with which to be able to perform until the end of the day.
Battery drain is closely related to having applications in the background, bad habits when charging the mobile, poorly tuned software focused on saving battery, not using dark mode it also consumes more battery, having Bluetooth, GPS, mobile data, etc. active.
Four cameras quite similar to each other
This is where we notice, on paper, less differences between the two terminals that are inside the ring. Both have 4 cameras and LED flash on the back, as well as a single sensor on the front, and the screen is used as a flash.
- Redmi Note 8: 48 MP + 2 MP (macro) + 2 MP (depth) + 8 MP (120º wide angle), what's more. For the selfie camera we have a 13 MP sensor.
- Redmi Note 9S: 48 MP + 5 MP (macro) + 2 MP (depth) + 8 MP (ultra-wide angle 119th). For the selfie camera they have incorporated a 16 MP sensor.
Design: Redmi Note 8 vs Redmi Note 9S

Here we see clear differences between one terminal and another, and that they are of the same brand and only a few months apart from each other.
Connectors
Both the Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 9S feature headphone jack on the bottom, as well as USB C.
Aesthetics and colors
On the one hand, we have the Redmi Note 8 in space black, lunar white and neptune blue, with a simple back, the module of elongated cameras on the left side and the fingerprint reader centered.
On the other hand, we have the Redmi Note 9S in glacier white, Aurora and interstellar gray, with a square and centered camera module.
Fingerprint reader
The position of the fingerprint reader is also something important when we are deciding on one model or another, so it is an issue that we did not want to overlook.
In the case of the Note 8 we have the fingerprint reader on the back part, while in the Note 9S model we have it on the the side.
Measures
The size, when looking for a mobile is very important, and if not, tell Apple, which in the middle of 2020 has presented a mobile below 5 inches. These are the data:
- Redmi Note 8: 158, 3mm x 75, 3mm x 8, 35mm and 190g in weight.
- Redmi Note 9S: 166.9mm x 76mm x 8.8mm and weighing 209g.
Both are under €200
If we are looking for balanced mobiles, of course these two terminals must be among our purchase options.
Buy: Redmi Note 8 for €152.49 (Amazon)
Buy: Redmi Note 9S for €195.90 (Amazon)
And so far this comparison of specifications of 2 terminals of the same range, same brand, but very different in design, price, processor, fingerprint reader, etc. We must clarify that the price that we reflect in the previous paragraph, may vary in the coming days or weeks, since that depends on Amazon, Redmi and demand of the product.
