Devolo Magic 2 WiFi Next is a new powerline system, which brings improvements to its integrated WiFi. After bringing the Internet connection to the desired room through the electrical network, a good WiFi is necessary for the devices to take advantage of it.
At the powerline level, the G.hn standard is used. The transmitter is connected to the router by means of an Ethernet cable, and then to a socket, in such a way that it carries the connection using the cables of the electrical installation to the transmitter.
The speed reaches 2,400 Mbps and can cover up to 500 m, although the quality of the cables is important. Powerline or PLC are a good solution against thick walls or ceilings, where WiFi has difficulty penetrating.
However, in the receiver's room the concept changes: not only do we have two Ethernet outlets, we also have WiFi to connect mobile phones, tablets and other devices.
The Devolo Magic 2 WiFi Next uses WiFi 5 (ac) dual-band MU-MIMO, which connects with multiple devices over time, improving speed and response time.
In addition, it supports additional technologies: through airtime fairness old equipment does not slow down new ones, and thanks toband steering places each device in the 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz band according to your needs.
Using several Devolo transmitters it is possible to create a WiFi Mesh network, where a single WiFi network is generated for the devices. The access point steering system is responsible for connecting each one to the appropriate transmitter, while thanks to fast connectswitching between them is instantaneous.
The tasks we perform over WiFi are increasingly demanding, such as 4K video streaming or video calls, and for this reason in the Devolo Magic 2 WiFi Next reinforces the wireless section with different technologies that optimize wireless networks.
Devolo Magic 2 WiFi Next, specifications
The features of the Devolo Magic 2 WiFi Next are quite technically complex, but important for good performance. These are all the details:

- Wireless network: WiFi 5 dual (5 GHz and 2.4 GHz) MU-MIMO with airtime fairness and band steering.
- Mesh functions: WiFi Monthly with access point steering and fast roaming.
- Ports: 2 Gigabit Ethernet.
- Connection: Plug & Play (transmitter and receiver are already paired).
- Security: WPA3, WPA2 and WPS encryption.
Devolo Magic 2 WiFi Next, price and availability
Several packs of the Devolo Magic 2 WiFi Next will be sold, to which up to 8 emitters can be added to cover a large house. They will be launched in July 2020 in Spain, and these are their prices:
- Starter Kit (base + receiver) for 199.90 euros.
- Multiroom Kit (base + 2 receivers) for 299.90 euros.
- Single (receiver only, to expand) for 129.90 euros.
Additionally, the Devolo Magic 2 DINrail will be sold for 169.90 euros in August. It is a transmitter that is installed directly in the electric panel of the house, also using G.hn at 2,400 Mbps, but that performs better when not using a plug.
After installation, which must be done by a professional electrician, the receivers can be placed in different rooms, so it makes sense as an alternative to wiring the whole house.
The Devolo Magic 2 WiFi Next is an interesting PLC, because many times when trying to improve WiFi coverage we forget that powerlines are a best choice when thick walls or excessive distance complicate the connection.
